The Wegovy pill has landed in UK pharmacies, but NHS access still lags behind

The week in brief

This week the UK's weight-loss market moved from injections-only to pill-in-hand. A daily Wegovy tablet is now being listed by major UK pharmacies and online clinics, while NHS access to Mounjaro has widened on paper for some patients.

There was also a notable NHS development outside weight loss: London's Evelina Hospital has opened a dedicated hair loss clinic for children. The wider pattern is familiar for UK patients comparing options: private access moves quickly, while NHS pathways expand more gradually.

The Wegovy tablet is now appearing across UK pharmacies

On 7 July 2026, the daily Wegovy tablet, oral semaglutide, went on sale through a range of UK pharmacies and online clinic brands. The medicine was approved by the MHRA on 11 June as the UK's first oral GLP-1 medicine for weight management.

It is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related health condition, alongside diet and exercise changes. Trial reporting for the highest 25mg dose described average weight loss of around 17% after 64 weeks.

What this means for you

If needles were the main reason you avoided GLP-1 treatment, this is now a real comparison point. But the useful number is not just the lowest advertised first-month price. Check the full dose ladder, whether the price is promotional, and what clinical support is included before choosing a provider.

NHS Mounjaro access has widened, but it is still a phased rollout

From July 2026, NHS specialist weight-management services widened tirzepatide, Mounjaro, eligibility to include some people with a BMI of 35 to 39.9 who also have at least four qualifying weight-related health conditions.

The criteria use lower BMI thresholds for people from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds, reflecting evidence that weight-related health risks can appear at a lower BMI in these groups.

What this means for you

If you were previously outside the BMI threshold, it may be worth asking your GP whether the new specialist-service criteria apply. This is not blanket GP prescribing, so expect referral pathways and local capacity to matter.

The UK's first NHS hair loss clinic for children has opened in London

St John's Institute of Dermatology and Evelina London Children's Hospital, part of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, have launched a dedicated NHS clinic for children and young people with hair loss.

The service covers conditions including alopecia areata, trichotillomania, thyroid-related hair loss, vitamin deficiency-related hair loss and hair loss after chemotherapy. It is expected to see around 70 children and young people a year.

What this means for you

If your child is dealing with hair loss, ask your GP what NHS referral options exist before assuming a private route is the only option.

Beyond weight loss: hair treatments and at-home diagnostics

What moved in digital health this week

  • VDPHL01 has completed enrolment across its male Phase 3 studies for pattern hair loss, moving the programme closer to large-scale efficacy and safety read-outs.
  • Cinainu, a topical botanical treatment made from four plant extracts, showed hair regrowth in children and adolescents with moderate to severe alopecia areata, according to trial results published in the British Journal of Dermatology.
  • Thriva has moved from traditional finger-prick lancets to a shoulder-based blood draw device, aimed at reducing failed or insufficient samples.
  • Lola Health, an at-home phlebotomy blood-testing service, lists panels from £130 for its Essential panel to £250 for its Complete Longevity panel.
  • Medichecks remains one of the broadest UK blood-test menus, with hundreds of individual tests and panels available.
What to watchAs GLP-1 use grows, expect more blood testing, thyroid, hormone and liver panel add-ons to be sold alongside weight-loss subscriptions. Check whether you actually need the extra tests before adding them to a plan.

Women's health: the NHS is planning a more digital front door

Where public and private women's care may be heading

  • NHS England is planning a digital-first online hospital, accessed through the NHS App, with menopause and menstrual conditions expected to be early priorities from 2027.
  • The Women's Digital Health Challenge has expanded from 2 to 26 supported innovations, including tools for menopause and breast health awareness.
  • NHS leaders continue to push women's health hubs that combine services into fewer appointments and reduce fragmented care.
What to watchMost of this will not be live for patients immediately. But it signals where NHS digital investment is heading, and private menopause and menstrual-health providers are likely to position around it before it launches.

Market and investment signals

Where public and private money is moving

  • NHS England has committed funding to ambient voice technology, AI tools that help turn patient-clinician conversations into medical notes, as part of wider digital investment.
  • Government health innovation funding continues to focus on faster access to drugs, devices and medical technologies.
  • UK digital health funding remains weighted toward clinical workflow software, rather than direct-to-consumer comparison or prescribing products.
What to watchGovernment money is flowing toward NHS infrastructure and clinical workflow. The direct-to-patient categories, weight loss, hair loss, ED, TRT and private blood testing, are still largely being shaped by private providers.
