Wegovy Pill UK: Everything You Need to Know (2026)
GLP-1 injections changed the way millions of people manage their weight. Now, for the first time, that same clinically proven treatment is coming in a daily tablet. The Wegovy pill, oral semaglutide 25mg, is expected to receive MHRA approval in the UK in early July 2026. It will be on the market through private providers almost immediately afterwards, such as Numan & Medexpress
No needles. No sharps bin. Just a tablet you take each morning.
Key facts at a glance
What is the Wegovy pill?
The Wegovy pill is an oral tablet containing semaglutide which is the same active ingredient found in the Wegovy injection pen. It was developed by Novo Nordisk specifically for the management of obesity and overweight in adults, and it works through the same biological mechanism as the weekly injection. The difference is simply how it enters your body.
Where the injectable version delivers semaglutide directly under the skin once a week, the tablet delivers it orally once a day. Same drug. Same clinical target. The pill was approved by the FDA in the US in December 2025 and launched there in January 2026. MHRA approval for the UK is expected around early July 2026, as reported by the Daily Mail in June 2026.
It is worth noting that oral semaglutide already exists in the UK under the name Rybelsus, but that is licensed only for type 2 diabetes and comes in doses up to 14mg. This new Wegovy pill is specifically for weight loss and is formulated at 25mg. As Voy and Juniper both note, these are fundamentally different products with different approvals and dose strengths.
How does it work?
The Wegovy pill is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, it mimics a natural gut hormone called GLP-1 that your body releases after eating. This hormone plays a key role in appetite regulation, and semaglutide activates the same pathways to support weight loss in three main ways:
- Appetite suppression - signals fullness to the brain, reducing how much you want to eat
- Slower digestion - delays gastric emptying so you feel fuller for longer after meals
- Blood sugar regulation - improves insulin sensitivity, reducing cravings driven by blood sugar spikes
How effective is the Wegovy pill? What the trials show
The main evidence comes from the OASIS clinical trial programme - a large-scale series of studies investigating oral semaglutide for weight loss. The key trial for the approved 25mg dose is OASIS .
The results were significant:
| Weight loss achieved | Semaglutide tablets (25mg) | Placebo |
|---|---|---|
| Average body weight loss | 16.6% | 2.2% |
| ≥5% body weight loss | 76% | 31% |
| ≥10% body weight loss | 60% | 14% |
| ≥15% body weight loss | 47% | 6% |
| ≥20% body weight loss | 28% | 3% |
Source: OASIS 4 Phase 3 trial. Results represent estimated outcomes assuming 100% adherence in a clinical trial population alongside lifestyle intervention. Individual results will vary.
An earlier trial, OASIS 1, looked at a higher 50mg dose over 68 weeks and found an average of 15.1% body weight reduction - though the 50mg dose is not currently approved. Results from both trials have been published in the Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine.
Dosage: how the Wegovy pill is taken
The Wegovy pill follows a four-stage dose escalation schedule, starting low to help your body adjust and minimise side effects. As outlined by Voy and Dr Weightmans, you work up to the 25mg maintenance dose over approximately three months:
| 1.5mg | 4mg | 9mg | 25mg |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting dose Days 1-30 | Step up Days 31-60 | Step up Days 61-90 | Maintenance Day 91+ |
Your prescriber may keep you on a dose for longer than 30 days if side effects need more time to settle. The full treatment effect is usually seen at the 25mg maintenance dose.
Side effects: what to expect
Side effects are consistent with other GLP-1 medications and tend to be most noticeable when starting a new dose or stepping up. They usually improve as your body adjusts. The most common ones include:
- Nausea
- Diarrhoea
- Constipation
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Fatigue
The gradual dose escalation schedule is specifically designed to reduce these effects. Most people find that symptoms improve significantly after the first few weeks on each dose. As Juniper notes, these side effects are well-understood for injectable GLP-1 class of medications and are generally manageable with the right clinical support.
When will the Wegovy pill be available in the UK?
MHRA approval for the Wegovy pill is expected in early July 2026, with private providers likely to begin offering it shortly after.
NHS availability will take longer. NICE will need to conduct a separate assessment before the pill is recommended for NHS use, a process that typically takes several months to over a year after MHRA approval. How much will the Wegovy pill cost in the UK?
No confirmed UK price has been set yet, but the pill is expected to be cheaper than the current injectable Wegovy, one of the key points highlighted in the Daily Mail coverage. In the US, it launched at $149-$299 per month (roughly £110-£230), significantly below the US list price for the injection.
UK pricing rarely mirrors US pricing, but current injectable Wegovy costs in the UK, around £86-£300 per month depending on dose and provider, provide a useful benchmark. Simple Online Pharmacy expects UK pricing to sit broadly within or below the current injection range.
| Injectable Wegovy (UK, current) £86-£300/mo | Wegovy pill (US launch price) $149-$299/mo | Wegovy pill (UK estimate) ~£100-£200/mo |

Who is the Wegovy pill for?
The Wegovy pill is for adults with obesity (BMI ≥30), or adults who are overweight (BMI ≥27) with at least one weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes. It is particularly well-suited to people who are interested in GLP-1 treatment but have been put off by the idea of weekly injections, a barrier that, as noted in Numan's own research into needle adversity, affects a significant proportion of people who could otherwise benefit from treatment.
It is a prescription-only medicine. You will need to complete a medical assessment with a regulated UK provider to confirm you are eligible and that it is clinically appropriate for you.
