If finger-prick kits have always worked for you, there may be no need to pay extra. Both methods collect capillary blood and both still have limits when a treatment decision needs a full venous sample.

What a Tasso device does
A Tasso is a single-use blood collection device that sticks to the back of your upper arm. You press a button, a tiny lancet pricks the skin, and a gentle vacuum pulls blood from the small vessels under the skin into a tube attached to the device.
You leave it in place for a few minutes while the tube fills, then remove it and post the sample to the laboratory. The main difference is that the device does the collecting for you, rather than you having to squeeze blood from your fingertip drop by drop.
The useful benefit is not that the blood is a completely different type. It is that the collection can be easier and cleaner for people who struggle with finger-prick kits.
What a finger-prick kit involves
A standard home kit usually includes lancets, wipes, a small collection tube, instructions and a prepaid return envelope. You warm your hands, prick the side of a fingertip, and squeeze blood into the tube until it reaches the fill line.
Done in good conditions, it can be quick and straightforward. Done with cold hands, dehydration, poor circulation or a shallow lancet attempt, it can become frustrating. The usual failure point is not the laboratory. It is not getting enough clean blood into the tube.
Is one more accurate than the other?
Not in the simple sense. Both Tasso and finger-prick kits collect capillary blood, and both are sent to accredited laboratories for analysis. The sample does not become more medically useful just because the collection device looks more advanced.
Research comparing Tasso-collected samples with standard venous blood draws has generally found close agreement for the tests studied. Antibody studies, for example, reported high agreement with venous samples when enough blood was collected.
The bigger difference is sample quality. With a finger prick, hard squeezing can damage red blood cells and mix more tissue fluid into the sample. That can affect markers such as potassium, LDH and AST, or lead the lab to reject the sample. A Tasso reduces that particular problem because you are not milking the fingertip.
If your previous finger-prick sample was rejected or came back haemolysed, a Tasso can be a sensible upgrade. If your result will decide whether you start treatment, your provider may still ask for a venous confirmation test.
Which one is more likely to fail?
Tasso is not foolproof, but studies have reported successful collections in the rough range of 70% to 95%, depending on setting and supervision. The lower figures tend to come from less controlled, real-world use.
What it can remove is the list of everyday reasons a finger prick comes up short:
- Cold hands or poor circulation slowing the flow
- Not drinking enough water before the test
- Pricking the wrong part of the fingertip
- Squeezing hard enough to damage the sample
- Stopping halfway because the process feels uncomfortable
- Thick or calloused skin on the fingertips
If none of those apply to you, and you have completed finger-prick tests easily before, there is little reason to upgrade by default.
Does a Tasso hurt less?
For many people, yes. Fingertips are sensitive, so a fingertip lancet can sting more than a small prick on the upper arm. In studies where users were asked about comfort, discomfort scores were generally low.
The other benefit is psychological. With a Tasso, the lancet is enclosed, so you do not see it. For people who avoid blood tests because the finger-prick step makes them hesitate, that can be the difference between doing the test and putting it off again.
What it costs and where you can get it in the UK
A growing number of UK testing services now offer Tasso collection on selected panels. Numan offers Tasso options on some at-home tests, Randox Health uses devices in home kits, and Blue Horizon lets customers upgrade compatible finger-prick orders for an extra fee on supported tests.
There are two checks to make before ordering. First, not every test works with the device, so confirm the exact panel is compatible. Second, check whether the upgrade cost is worth it for you. A small upgrade fee can be good value if it avoids a failed sample, but unnecessary if finger-prick collection works well for you.
When you still need a venous blood test
Neither Tasso nor finger-prick collection replaces a needle-and-vial venous draw in every situation. You may still need venous testing when:
- The panel is large and needs more blood than a capillary kit can collect
- The result is close to a treatment threshold
- The marker is particularly sensitive to sample handling
- You are starting treatment that needs confirmation, such as testosterone replacement therapy
A capillary test is often useful for screening or tracking. It is less suited to being the only result behind a major treatment decision.
How to choose
Choose a finger-prick kit if you have used one successfully before, the test you want is not available with Tasso, or you would rather avoid the upgrade fee.
Choose Tasso if you have failed a finger-prick test before, have cold hands or poor circulation, are needle-averse, or want to reduce the chance of having to repeat the whole collection. The value is convenience, comfort and sample reliability, not a magical improvement in the blood itself.
Tasso and finger prick both collect capillary blood. If finger pricks work for you, stick with what is included. If they do not, a Tasso upgrade is usually a practical way to improve your odds of getting a usable sample first time.
